To the north of Sydney lie incredible coastlines and national parks. Places where the vivid Pacific Ocean seeps inland through estuaries and inlets creating landscapes perched between endless surf beaches and placid lakes that reflect green mountain ranges.
Throughout Myall Lakes and Booti Booti National Park many campgrounds provide idyllic spots to explore the rugged coastlines, sub-tropical rainforests and giant lakes perfect for swimming, kayaking or standup paddleboarding.
We had spent some time in Myall Lakes on a previous camping trip, so this time we pushed a little further north to ‘The Ruins’ campground which sits just behind Seven Mile Beach. The campground backs onto the rainforest and is dwarfed by a giant rocky headland where waves crash and windswept trees whisper and bend in the sea breeze. From the headland stretches endless, squeaky white sand for seven miles along the coastline up towards the nearest town of Foster Tuncurry.
The beauty of this campground is the beach is so wide and endless that you honestly feel like you have the whole place to yourself. The backdrop of the headland and rainforest makes you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere and at night, the Milky Way becomes visible to the naked eye hanging suspended above the campsite. But, despite all this, the drive into Foster with its major supermarkets and shops is only 15 minutes making it easy to get supplies, ice, food and whatever you need. To top it off, the campground itself has excellent facilities with flushing toilets, warm showers BBQs and more.
This is the perfect spot to spend a few days beach camping with family during summer. Check out our video of our time at The Ruins Campground.
